Learning how to identify pure leather is an important skill for anyone who buys belts, wallets, bags, or furniture, because the difference between genuine leather and synthetic materials affects both durability and price. Here are the most reliable methods you can use to tell them apart.

Look at the surface and edges. Real leather has a natural, uneven grain with small pores and subtle variations in texture, like human skin, because it is skin. Synthetic materials, such as PU and PVC, repeat an identical pattern across the surface and often feel smooth and plastic-like. On the cut edge of a belt, genuine leather shows a fibrous, slightly rough texture, while bonded or faux leather looks uniform and layered like cardboard.

Use your sense of smell. Real leather has a distinctive, pleasant, organic smell that comes from the tanning process. Synthetic materials usually have little or no smell, or a chemical, plastic odor. This test is not perfect because some finishing processes can mask the natural scent, but it is a good first indicator.

Test the texture and temperature. Genuine leather warms quickly when you hold it and feels soft and slightly supple, while fake leather stays cool longer and feels stiffer. Press your fingernail into the surface: real leather will leave a slight mark that slowly disappears, whereas synthetics either resist the pressure or show a permanent crease.

The water drop test is also useful, but use it carefully. Place a drop of water on an inconspicuous area: genuine leather absorbs water slowly and darkens where the drop sits, while most synthetic materials cause the water to bead up and roll off. If the surface is coated, the leather may also repel water, so combine several tests before making a decision.
